Joe's holding another 'audience': http://www.morienval.com/london.html

It fits with my schedule, so I'll be going.

Curious location.

It's tempting.

RE: Joe Saward evening, City of London 21st June
I went to one a few years ago that he held in a country house hotel near Silverstone. It was a lovely venue but not very well attended - people camping at the track didn't want to leave, and those staying in hotels are scattered over the countryside and also not keen to drive far.

The advantage of having it in London is that loads of people can go regardless of whether they're going to the race or not, and everyone can use public transport.

He was very outspoken and, although he's inclined to think he's god's gift, he is a proper journalist and has a lot of detailed insight. It must have been 2008 when I went, for we had a lot of entertaining and libellous banter about Max, Ron, $100m fines, texting, photocopiers...

Regards,
Mark

some might argue that having financial ties to one of the competing organizations he's supposed to be covering refutes that assertion. or at least the "proper" part.

Assuming that, to be a journalist, it is "proper" to not have any financial ties to the subjects you are reporting ... or does that make you a lobbyist

that's interesting. i don't think joe is a lobbyist - he doesn't act like one, at least overtly. but he does seem to have taken a step in that direction by drawing a paycheck from caterham. he certainly isn't adhering to the "proper" ethics of journalism.

Aren't improper ethics a requirement in F1? Wink

honestly, i don't really care about joe's ethics. i didn't read him before, so there's no loss for me. it just bugs me that he thinks there isn't a conflict of interest. i want him to be reminded on a daily basis that he sold his credibility.

RE: Joe Saward evening, City of London 21st June
One Saward snippet that the F1W famiglia may find useful is that the New Jersey GP is to be officially announced this coming Monday. It will be in the week following Canada (I make that to be 13-15th June, although he stressed it wasn't 100% certain).

Hotel prices are currently low along the Jersey shore, although they are obviously about to rocket for that w/e. He's just booked.

I've done some research since I'm fairly likely to be able to make it to this race, and it may be a good time to book a refundable hotel room somewhere along the HBLR light rail system (which has a station at Port Imperial, which will be right next to the track). The Doubletree at Jersey City looks good, but there are some smart hotels overlooking the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson River if you like that sort of thing...

Regards,
Mark

Hotels are nice, but might I suggest an F1W Famiglia campout at my house an hour from Jersey City? The menu will feature the Garden State's finest cuisine and homebrew on tap 24 hours.

The chance of rain is somewhere between Spa and Bahrain.

That's what you call a generous offer!

RE: Joe Saward evening, City of London 21st June
Wow.
Unfortunately that whole sector of next season's calendar has now been thrown in to disarray, and nobody really now knows when Jersey will happen (if at all). Anyway, I'm hanging on to my (cancellable) hotel bookings for now.

Maybe I'll just come over anyway and we'll have a few beers?

Regards,
Mark

Sounds good. Well, if NJ happens, whenever that is, the offer stands.
