Quote:French automaker PSA Peugeot Citroen said it would withdraw from Le Mans 24-Hour endurance racing before the 2012 season, citing financial reasons.

"This decision has been taken in the context of a difficult economic environment in Europe," the Peugeot brand said in a statement on Wednesday. "Peugeot has chosen to concentrate resources on its sales performance in 2012."

Hadn't thought of that, but of course it will.

I saw the first pictures of Toyota testing their new car this morning. I wonder if this might play nicely into their hands. You'd have to bank on the organisers tweaking the rules to make the Petrol/Gas powered cars more competitive to stop Audi embarrasing everyone this year, but that may result in a well funded team being able to gain an advantage.

I also wonder if it will give Audi the chance to move away from Diesel if Hybrid is the next format manufacturers will take.

RE: Peugeot out of Endurance racing
my understanding is that the volkswagen group want audi and porsche on different engine types. audi has diesel and porsche has petrol hybrid. of course, things could always change and we still haven't seen whether porsche is willing to play ball with their corporate semi-overlords, but that's what i've heard.

Wasn't there some issue over the equivalency formula for Diesels putting them at a disadvantage?

RE: Peugeot out of Endurance racing
there are always "issues" with the equivalency formula. any team that doesn't win blames the equivalency. it's been especially hard lately, because the two manufacturer teams (which will obviously be better developed) use diesel and the top privateer teams use petrol, so it's really hard to tell which difference is causing how much of the discrepancy. prodrive/aston was supposed to help solve that puzzle, but that didn't happen.
