RE: Robert Kubica
yeah, i'm with you, chemics. everybody crashes. heck, everybody totals cars, especially when they're new to top machinery, as kubica is. he's got the talent. i have every reason to believe he will develop the patience.

You have to cross the limit to find it, the mark will be if he keeps doing it.

I've always thought Latvala is massively overrated because he has never stopped crashing despite lots of time in top cars. I don't think he'll ever be champion, and now he's being made to look decidedly average by Ogier, who has as much if not more speed and the balance not to crash.

Love this - rolls it over and immediately picks up a gear to get going. He was leading at the time

Notice how he doesn't use his right arm

Still finished 6th

I can't find the in-car footage, but at X-Games 2006 McRae rolled and had the car in gear mid-roll (he was selecting first while upside down) and dropped the clutch pretty much as the wheels hit the ground. He was second to Pastrana by less than half a second I think.

classic moment. i couldn't find the in-car either, but this clip shows how quickly he dropped the clutch after getting his wheels back down:

I wonder if he is protecting that arm from further injury and/or re-injury... loss of movement/control or a mixture of both.

The arm is still injured, he has to have a modified gear shift for Rally as he can't use the spec unit. I think he has a hydraulic unit (like WRC) rather than one that uses the force of the arm, but the shifts are slowed down to a level just slower than the standard units can shift to ensure he has no advantage. His shifter broke on a recent rally, he had to use the standard unit and he struggled quite a bit physically with it.

Thanks for the info Chemics!

I hope that he can make a recovery to F1... even if it is at least as a reserve driver.... From all the reports it appears that Ferrari and most recently Mercedes are interested..... (on low heat :-) )

Kubica won WRC2 category at the Greek WRC round and was 11th overall. Not too shabby

He's said he won't be going back to F1, my guess is that he has a fulfilling career in WRC and the arm is too much to work around.

WRC looks most likely, I've heard comments from WRC team bosses that they think he has far more potential in rally than Kimi. It certainly looks that way, so far he has been fast and crashed a bit or had technical issues, but he'll soon learn to temper his speed with experience.

Former F1 star Robert Kubica continues to prove his hand as a rally drive after taking another dominant win in the WRC 2 class and 9th outright.

Tally Italia Sardegna

He nearly pulled out of the event, the WRC2 cars were being sent out at 1 minute intervals which was leaving each car driving through dust, especially Kubica as he was catching the cars ahead of him on the road. He threatened to drop out unless the organisers gave WRC2 the same 2 minute gaps as the WRC cars. I've seen him take a stance on safety a few times recently with reference to the levels in F1 and how the FIA make sure things are done right for F1.

He's going to be good for WRC, he clearly has the pace and it can't be long until he moves up to a full WRC program, plus he carries a big profile to being fans into the sport and he's obviously not afraid to step up to make the sport safer.

I guess nobody in WRC2 has the weight to make a threat like that and WRC run at the longer intervals, but he probably carries more star power than anyone else in WRC anyway. I assume his safety consciousness is a combination of seeing how good it can be in F1 and being all too aware of what happens when you get it wrong in a rally car. He is completely right to complain though, there is no need to have extra risks like this. Apparently the event organisers has taken it upon themselves to put the cars 1 minute apart when 2 is standard, but it also falls within the FIA rules to allow them to do it.

I think at one point Kubica had to stop in stage as he was only 20s behind the car ahead of him on the road because his pace was so good.

RE: Robert Kubica
in fairness, it's hard to predict the conditions and get the interval right. but i fully support any driver standing up for safety.

They should have known though, it wasn't the first time the event was run. I suspect it was more a case of trying to rush the cars through as quickly as possible. It's probably also pretty rare for cars at that level to take most of the minute out of each other in the stage.

I got the impression that the 2 minute interval is the norm on other events.

RE: Robert Kubica
the event has been run before, but dust conditions change by the minute, let alone year-to-year. every rally wants to get the cars through as fast as possible, because it makes everyone happier - spectators, organizers, locals.
