Kubica injured in rallye accident
Not many news yet, some even contradicting, only certain thing is Robert Kubica had an accident and is now at a hospital in Italy.
Reports range from minor wrist injuries all the way to amputation of the hand and life threatening injuries. Hope it's not that serious by far.

Kubica hospitalised after rally crash

Robert Kubica has been taken to hospital in Italy after a high-speed rally crash.

The Renault Formula 1 driver was contesting the Ronde di Andora rally in a Skoda Fabia when he had a heavy accident on the opening stage.

Kubica was transported to Pietra Ligure hospital by helicopter and is currently undergoing medical checks. Team sources confirmed that Kubica remained conscious throughout.

The Renault team said it would release further information once more was known about Kubica's condition. His co-driver Jakub Gerber was not injured.

Kubica has regularly contested rallies alongside his F1 career in recent years. This weekend's event in Italy was his first appearance in a Super 2000 car.

Should Kubica not be fit for the start of the 2011 season, his Renault team has no shortage of reserve drivers.

However, team principal Eric Boullier made it clear last week that Bruno Senna would be his number one choice to slot into a race seat - because he is the one with the most contemporary F1 experience.

"I will give it to the one who is ready," Boullier said when asked which of his reserves was most likely to be used first. "Bruno is the most ready driver."

I'm glad Robert's injury is not life threatening.
But broken wrists at this time pretty much guarantees that he won't make the first race?

From BBC: Robert Kubica has fractured his left leg and arm and it's unlikely he will be ready for the new season.

Wonder if Renault will give Senna a chance or look for someone else.

When did Bruno sign with Lotus-Renault? I totally missed that news.

He was presented as third driver (along Romain Grosjean) during the presentation of the new car last week.

Most certainly won't be testing and doubt will start the season. That won't help Renault develop their car with two relatively rookie drivers.

Renault could still give a call to Robert's old pal Nick, he's still available and has lots of experience.
More pics, not the kind I like to see: http://www.sportmediaset.mediaset.it/for...ente.shtml
And here's his car: http://twitpic.com/3x2otw. No visible damage to cockpit at least.
The medical report has been delayed by two hours, so 4pm CET, 3pm GMT.

RE: Kubica injured in rallye accident
Hmmm, his agent apparently said the main problem was the hand, not the leg.
And now a video of what is left of the car: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78smQo6ZR...r_embedded

Don't listen to the commentary, they're saying an arm was amputated, but I think it's just sensationalism at this point.
Even if we don't know yet about the gravity of Robert's injury, there's a lot of speculation about who could replace him. Rumours name (along with the obvious Senna and Grosjean) names like Heidfeld, Hulkenberg and Sutil. Since the two latter are employed by Force India, it could mean both of them get a racing drive.

From USA Today:

"Carrozzino said the driver underwent an examination to assess any possible damage to internal organs and the brain. Asked about a report that one his arms would be amputated, Carrozzino said that "all assessments have yet to be made."

"An amputation is not a decision that is made so rapidly," he said. "I do not confirm or deny this report."

#F1 Seems likely now that Kubica's injuries were caused by the end of the barrier penetrating the footwell, not a side impact.
If so it's a sad echo of the seventies, when poorly secured barriers were linked to so much tragedy in F1
Quote:Kubica is understood to have swiped a wall and hit a crash barrier in a Super 2000 Skoda Fabia on the first stage of the rally - which he was competing in shortly after completing the first week of pre-season F1 testing with Renault at Valencia.

According to sources at the event, Kubica was trapped in the car for more than one hour until specialist extraction equipment could get to the scene of the crash.

There are unconfirmed reports that Kubica's injuries were caused by the end of a crash barrier penetrating the car - which would explain why his injuries were on his right hand side rather than by the door.

In other words, if they don't make it, he can't use his hand any more. If they make it, it will take a long time of reeducation. I fear his F1 career is ended. Sad

i wonder if renault is regretting blocking him from participating in the monte and sending him to some minor rally where the safety and medical services are not up to snuff.

RE: Kubica injured in rallye accident
Renault is probably regretting allowing him to participate in any rally event. That's it for them this year, unless they can pull something very spectacular, I don't see them winning a race this year, let alone fight for the championship.

This is very sad indeed. Hope he is able to come back to F1. Reminds me of the helicopter accident Nannini had.

Bloody hell, that's absolutely terrible. Such a shame for him - let's hope function can be restored.

RE: Kubica injured in rallye accident
Quote:Robert Kubica has completed a seven hour operation under Italian hand surgery specialist Prof Igor Rossello, but it will be some time before his true condition becomes clear.

“We have to wait at least a week to see if his hand survives,” Rossello told Italian media, referring to the likelihood of a return to full functionality. He added that it could take a year for the Pole to be able to use his right arm again.

Don't know what to say apart from: that sucks, and hope Kubica will get full functionality of his hand back.

RE: Kubica injured in rallye accident
Well, surely he'll miss at least part of the 2011 Season.
Considering that Petrov is still almost a rookie, I don't see Renault replacing Robert with Grosjean or Bruno Senna.
They will have to call either quick Nick or De La Rosa.
I bet we'll see Nick driving that black Renault in Bahrain.
