V8 Supercars - Bathurst 1000
This is Australia's iconic event. It's lost a lot of it's charm due to the corporatising of the category into a two-make series, with cars no longer resembling their donor's, but it still has the certain something required to keep it in high esteem. It's a full street circuit in the countryside, 3hrs from Sydney. 31-ish cars will cover 1000km with two drivers. It's incredibly steep with lots of blind high speed bends that TV doesn't do justice to, with the fastest bend for touring cars in the world (300kmh/185mph.) The only notable co-drivers this year are David Brabham who will drive for the team that took Marcos Ambrose (now a left-turner) to 2 titles, but not when this happened, and Ryan Briscoe (former Toyota F1 tester, now a Penske IRL mostly left-turner). At the end of the month is another co-driving street event at Surfers Paradise, a former long-running IndyCar event and where the A1 Championship failed to appear one week before the event, that will feature a stack of imported drivers.

The Bathurst race should end just as the F1 cars are lining up. 9 hrs straight of motor racing. And in 'normal' time too. Ahhhhh.

I'm guessing someone will have a feed running (no, I have no idea how to do it - sorry). I'll post a link if I find one during race day if you happen to be awake and are looking for something to amuse you in the wee hours.

That accident looks like something Paul Tracy would have been involved in. I've had lots of fun in the past driving Bathurst virtually.

As for Surfer's Paradise, it was a complete crime that the IRL let that race slip away. I remember watching Juan Montoya race at Surfers, back when he knew how to turn left AND right.

Mansell at Surfers was magnificent. THe quality of his driving was immediately evident. The regulars were bouncing off the limiter, but not Nige, quick, crisp downshifts. He was a pleasure to watch

Starts about 10am local time and goes till around 5pm.

The track is amazing - you can drive your road car on it and when you do so it gives you a true appreciation for the challenges that the drivers face - it is no homogenised Tilke track.

My thoughts exactly - at the moment only Ford Falcons & Holden Commodores are allowed whereas in the past there were a number of vehicle categories based on engine size and other makes were allowed in the outright category.

While still our main racing format in Oz the series has been losing fan interest over the last few years and there has been talk of revamping by changing the spec and introducing new manufacturers which in my opinion is badly needed. I will take a look at Bathurst but don't think I have watched a race on TV from the series this year and would now be hard pushed to name 5 of the top drivers

Remember the old days when you got up at 6:00am to watch the race start at 7:30 and there were Holdens, Falcons, Minis, Escorts, Alfas, BMWs, Datsuns and a whole bunch more

Now it starts at 9:30 and there is only one class of racing on a spec chassis where only the outer skin is different - gone a bit like Nascar. Wish they would return to real production racing with brake and safety equipment upgrades.

Looks like I'm watching it from home again. Couldn't get enough takers to fill the second car for the trek to Bathurst

Exactly. I stopped watching the V8s for a long time, and was rather annoyed when I got back into it, to learn of wasting a Sunday morning lie in due to the late race start. And how good where the towies back in the day?? Standing behind a tilt tray with cars coming at them flat out ready to slice them in half! Now the SC and E85 fuel has turned it into a series of sprint races. I guess that keeps it exciting at the end of the race so that no-one can win by 6 laps.

I guess the 12hr Production race at Easter is closer to the old days.

Hunt around if you have pay-TV, there may be a highlights package coming up. The best bits are the first and last 20 laps.

Surfers was worse than Malaysia, China and Singapore put together when the tropical storms hit. 2002 was one of the worst crashes I watched on live TV. There's also a clip from 2003 that features Mr Tracy a lot.
The track is 6.2km. The elevation difference from the top to the pit straight is at least 500ft, creating steep grades up and down the mountain. It's all public street. Not all that long ago, motorbikes raced there as well - truly crazy stuff.

The 7 year old track record was beated in the final practice session today (Fri).

Qualifying was completed today, with those from 11th down strating in that order. The top ten have a shoot out tomorrow afternoon, with practice throughout the day. The regular drivers are required to be paired with non-Championship drivers this year. In the past, the team mates would pair up in one car and outsiders would field the 2nd car. Not sure which way is better; we'll find out on Sunday afternoon.

Weather report for Bathurst

"Cloud increasing. Isolated showers on and east of the ranges. Winds E averaging 15 to 30 km/h increasing to up to 40 km/h during the morning. Temperatures between 14 and 20 during the day. "

Intermittent showers could make for an interesting race

Starts in just over 60 minutes at 10am local time

Those XXXX angels are rubbish -don't know why they are there
Big accident on lap 1 - Fabian Coulthard does a DC when his rear tyre lets go at the fastest point on the track. Must have rolled 5 or 6 times. Car destroyed, driver is ok

RE: V8 Supercars - Bathurst 1000
There is quite a stir on here today re the TV coverage - As the day went on the initially live coverage fell behind - so much so that the race had ended by the coverage still had just under 12 laps or 20 minutes to go --- the excuse from the telecaster -- the racing was so exciting that they could not break into the telecast so they basically ran their adds and delayed the telecast progressively.

I suppose there are pros & cons to that approach - on the positive you get to see the whole race without chunks disappearing because of adverts - still to advertise it as live is a bit of a furphy. They have never done this before.

and it messes up people with internet tools like live timing and anyone at the race using the TV coverage for information.
