1997 Villeneuve
1999 Frentzen
2003 Raikkonen
2005 Raikkonen
2006 Schumi
2007 Hamilton

Just a guess, I'm really not sure about 1997 & 2003 - but at least moi will remember Massa's vice championship :-D
Just to correctly show who came second
1998 Mchael Schumacher
1999 was Eddie Irvine
2000 Hakkinen
2001 Coulthard
2002/2004 Barrichello

OK, Frentzen finished third in 1999. Still enough of a surprise...

I think this sort of proves my point, sort of, it took us bunch of egg head F1 fanatics to work all that out, no doubt with the help of Googiki.

RE: Massanettes Club
I was pretty sure about who came second, but just checked HHF on wiki before posting.
But Yaay is correct, most people can't remember or care who finished "first of the runners-up" to quote Ron Speak.
I need a Grand Prix soon.

RE: Massanettes Club
Yes, this three weeks-pause is dreadful...
I DID NOT use wiki or googi to make my little list, that's why the list was not complete and had some flaws - the internet really makes people silly - with the great exception of this board, of course.

But hey, I think becoming second, third, or even tenth in the f1 championship is a huge achievement. Even being a test driver is an achievement. The real fans will remember every result of ther fav. team and driver. It's just that the people who should know the names (i.e. head of sponsoring/marketing at B I G companies and Bernie's special VI-not-to-worry-we'll-pick-you-up-at-the-airport-people) remember the winners only...

RE: Massanettes Club
Didn't Ron say it as bit harsher - Second place is first of the loosers?

I quizzed my next door neighbour about this. He is strictly a golfer, if it's not something to do with golf then it is not worth the effort.

Q1. Do you know who came second in last years Formula One World Championship?
A: - No.
Q2. Do you know who won last years championship?
A: - Lewis, someone Lewis. (This was obviously a guess as we will see)
Q3: How many F1 Drivers can you name?
A: Lewis, ........ Schumacher.
(This is despite the local pub he frequents being owned by Mark Webber)

I ended the conversation there as I was in danger of being quizzed about golf, whereby my only answer would be Tiger Woods, in the hope it might be correct. I concluded that my neighbour is not the average Joe. I will continue the research.

I highly doubt your scientifical approach, because your survey obviously lacks an adequate number of random samples and therefore is not representative.

btw you can see how much MSC hurt the sport if the only name you neighbur know is his. and - what happened to Buttonmania?

OK, my other neighbour is quite knowledgeable about F1 - an above average casual fan I would say. I will wait until he is drunk (to level the advantage) and ask him how many second places he can name.

BTW Yaay, most people remember Stirling Moss coming second through the fifties. So much so that many people think he was actually a WDC at one time.

I love the graphic you have calling him a gnome. We call him the hobbit. I would join this club but it pains me to see the red devil win races! joking...but i don't see Massa finishing the year off as the champ. (unless something bad happens to Mclaren) he is fast and has a good car but the guy just can't drive without a nice dry track, which means he has no chance in Japan or Brazil that's if it doesn't rain but there's a small chance of that happening

Don't ever count Massa out in Brazil. That would be a mistake. Actually, just counting him out anywhere would be a mistake really. He has the speed to match and surpass even Lewis so disregarding his chances would be just rediculous.

I disagree seven spins in the rain shows something is up, but baring any rain I wouldn't count him out by any stretch

RE: Massanettes Club
He has definitely stepped it up since that day though. After that he really seems to have knuckled down and found some focus. He has had some days of fine driving in the rain though. Silverstone was a freak day with a bad setup and of course a nervous driver. I won't say that wasn't bad, but I would not immediately assume he can't ever cut it in the rain either. I want to see another wet race soon.

I was actually specifically referring to brazil though, where his win in 2006 was very well earned and last year's race he also ran very very well too.
