Good to see some people haven't given up on the pointless pursuit of speed in a road car.
I rather like the paint scheme. How many gallons per mile (GPM) does it get?
I seem to remember hearing you can burn a tank of fuel in 6 minutes at full chat. That's about 26 miles and a tank is 22 (real) gallons, so 1.18mpg.

Although getting to work in 10 minutes has a certain appeal!!
But you can't listen to the F1 Weekly Podcast in a 10 minute commute.
you can over the course of a couple days.
I have a friend who picked up a Veyron from a distressed owner for "cheap" (ok, but less than a million pounds is cheap for supercars) during the financial crisis. He drove it a couple times and put it in storage - he thinks its a much better investment than the stock market for his nest egg.

He says the Veyron has a 2nd key in the armrest that unlocks the full power potential of the car. He concurs that it sucks fuel like a whirlpool and is 100% impractical for use.
The "classic" car market is about to crash again. It's over inflated and we will see a repeat of the late 70's/80's. I am still looking for a 246 but they are triple the prices from 10 years ago, it's unsustainable partly due to the influx of all these supercars. There are too many around to become rare or classical for a long time. The root market for classics are people who are prepared to live under them ever weekend and spend hours carving a new gasket for a 30 year old SU out of a sheet of cork but the popularity of these limited edition things with sat nav and computerised stability systems will not fit into that bracket.

I believe you also have to call Bugatti who will come out with the special tyres that are rated for top speed before you can have the full fat experience.

Yes, if you watch the TopGear where they try to get max speed out of the Veyron, they show how the 2nd key changes the aero of the car. They also talk about burning through the gas tank slightly quicker than you would burn up the tires.
what they meant by burn up the tires was, you would run out of fuel before the tires burst into flames.
Exactly.

I wonder how long until someone makes a "road" car that will top 300mph, there is already talk of SSC having a more powerful Aero and a 1200bhp Hennessey Venom.

The arm's race is on between supercar makers, but it won't be too easy to get to 300.

Aerodynamic drag increases with the square of velocity.
268^2 = 71,824
300^2 = 90,000
so that's a 25% increase in drag for a <12% increase in velocity.

It's not really feasible to create 1500+ hp road cars right now, so to get to 300, manufacturers will have to work on a combination of weight reduction and making even more slippery smooth shaped road cars that can cut through the air. A 300 mph road car might require a ridiculously impractical long tail.
aero is definitely key to top speed at this point. bugatti wasted a lot of energy going the power route. it has almost twice the power of other supercars that can go only 22% slower. but then, we all knew they weren't aiming for engineering excellence, but for a fourth digit in the bhp column. what a waste...
They got us talking about it. Job Done.
who got us talking about it? that's another huge mistake; it's sold at a loss, so its only value is marketing, but that's the only car made under that mark, so there's nothing to market.
So they say..........
Yes Yaaay, the 246 is around U.S. $120K here.

Speaking of tires, the Veyron's tires must be shipped to France which is the only place on earth where the tires can be dismounted and remounted on those special wheels. The cost? From the US: $40K (for all four).
