Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is eyeing plans for a second race in the United States, after confirming on Thursday that talks are ongoing about an event in New York.

Although Ecclestone has already signed a deal for the US GP to return in 2012 at a purpose-built facility in Austin, Texas, that has not stopped him looking at other opportunities in the country.

And despite plans for a race in Liberty State Park falling through earlier this year, Ecclestone has said that another idea for an event in New York is being seriously considered.

"It's happening," he told AUTOSPORT. "We are talking to them and trying to do our best. Let's see what happens."

When asked how sure he was that the Texas race would go ahead, amid scepticism from some quarters about whether the funding exists for the event, Ecclestone said: "100 per cent."

Ecclestone has also played down the prospects of Spain's second race moving from Valencia to Mallorca in the next few years. He met with representatives of a new Mallorca track at the recent European Grand Prix, but has said there was no ongoing plan to change venues.

"There is no discussion for that," he said.

So with Liberty State Park out of the running, where?
I assume it put the previously discussed tracks in the state back on the agenda, or is it just Bernie keeping talk moving to see if anyone wants to give him $20M.

It would make a lot of sense having these two with Canada all together to keep the costs of travelling to North America down. Who knows, maybe get Mexico & Argentina on the calendar as well and have a few more races over this way.
it's not monticello. that was nonsense. i'm still thinking a street/parking lot circuit at the meadowlands.

but there really should be two races in america. it's too big a country to be covered by one. though with the lack of any lately, one would certainly be a good step.

and by the way, i'm glad bernie is heeding my advice and being more direct in his support for the austin group.
Maybe he needs some legal representation in the USA after you pass the Bar, you seem to have his ear.
call me, bernie. i'm your man.
If you're gonna do it, do it right - right?
Do it with me.......
Chris Pook of LBGP fame is now linked with NJF1. Let's hope this project blooms in the Garden State.

For anything to happen in New Jersey they will need a serious sugar daddy! The state is in horrible financial condition and couldn't afford a pit pass to an F-1 race. The Skiing Area/Shopping Center/Event facility (Xanadu) they have built at the Meadowlands sits vacant. I'll be surprised if anyone can make this happen here.

Maybe I'm out of touch, but what have we heard from these people in Austin TX? I still doubt that they have the finances to build a track and facilities on time and pay Bernie his race stipend!

I may have to change my handle to "naysayer".
can we please not get into another "if they aren't telling the media anything, they must be failing. quick, sponsors, look! we have no information, so they must be failing. you'd be daft to get involved with them!"? please?
I thought they had the land permits sorted ahead of time, so presumably now they have a deal they can go and get the money. I expect we will hear something soon enough as they will need to get cracking before too long, but like Frank says, it may be a little too early to start writing them off just yet.
