The man from Toowoomba, Queensland is making a mockery of Indycars.
Already Will Power has won the first two round of the year.
This week he has been the fastest in all free practices and just got the pole for the second week.
Surely he is good enough for F1?
Are people in Australia familiar with him?
Other notes
- Taku starting in 6th.
- Simona ahead of Danica again.
- Baguette last! I expected more from the current WS by Renault champ.

I know Taku will take this round. This Australian with a made up name will meet his match.
Why is Baguette behind Milka, although he lapped over 3 seconds faster?

The name is for real - he's been racing at National level since 2000

Very few, even motorsport fans, know him or much about him down here. IRL is only shown on ESPN, which isn't overly popular with payTV subscribers. He's a great talent and done a lot without bucket loads of family money behind him. He's a real character. Ryan Briscoe is another Aussie who had a good run in IRL and now in ALMS etc. His huge crash in 2005 at Chicagoland is on the wall at my office. Fingers crossed for us today - Will Power in IRL and Casey Stoner on pole in Qatar. Going to have to channel surf

For Q1, IndyCar splits the grid into two groups.
I think they do this because lot of the road courses in IndyCars are short compared to F1 tracks.
So there were 13 cars in Q1 (Group1) and 12 cars in Q1 (Group2). Top 6 from these groups moves on to Q2.
As for the cars that got eliminated, they are placed alternately.
So 7th car from group 1 becomes 13th. 7th car from group 2 becomes 14th
Duno was the 12th car from group 2, so she is placed in 24th.
Baguette was the 13th car from group 1, so he is placed in 25th.
IndyCars does this because there may be changing weather condition between sessions.
It would be unfair to penalize entire group because their session was compared to the other group whose session was dry.
Thanks cozmoose. I knew about the two groups and the rest of the quali, but thought the cars eliminated would be placed by timing. The different conditions makes sense, though. Does not seem fair to poor Baguette though, but I guess he won't have to much trouble passing Milka.
Beatifull track, they should host an F1 GP.
The streaming was jumping like crazy with me so I couldn't watch it.
The track looked fantastic.
Will Power is a stud. It's hard to believe he didn't have a full time ride until this year; this guy does nothing but win poles, set fast laps and dominate races.
I just got the Autosport report in on the race.
Helio Castroneves took his first victory since Texas last June as he played a canny fuel strategy game to win the IndyCar Series' inaugural round at Barber Motorsports Park.
Canny for those who don't have this work in their local dialect means shrewd or clever.
When Danica won on the same basis it was luck and she fell on the pot.

It's canny when you can also win races by sheer speed and overtaking.
Helio can do both.
Danica is looked down upon because fuel strategy is the only way she can compete.
I think in that case it was more Andretti and his team completely messed up on fuel strategy, rather than Castroneves doing something special.
Does anyone know what happened to Simona de Silvestro? I watched a bit around lap 65-70 and she was cruising around P10, then I just saw she ended up in P21.
Simona had a late pitstop, not enough fuel.
why did Sato finish last?
I watched only the last few laps of the race. that track is great. it reminds of Brands Hatch in some parts.
Danica was unable to make 2 stop strategy and had to pit late for a splash of fuel.
Simona was able to save enough fuel for 2 stop strategy but spun on lap 85/90. Went from P11 to P21 lap down as result.
Sato's car had a mechanical. It stopped on the racetrack early in the race.
His team was able to fix it and he came back out some 20 laps down, basically treating it as a test session.

I agree that it's a great looking track. Lots of elevation, blind crests and deep braking. It would be good sitting up on those embankments watching the F1s trip around.
I loved the name of the event even more: Grand Prix of Alabama
As for F1, it kinda leads in from what was being said in other threads - they had to do 90 laps today. That would lead to lots of lapped cars. But then again, we know what fun traffic can be. The drivers would hate it, which is another indicator that fans would love it.
I watched the race last night on DVR. Fuel strategy races are not too exciting to watch IMO. But the track looked great. Shame Marco couldn't have had a winning strategy.
Thought IRL was set to DVR on my TV...apparently I am mistaken.
A surprisingly good race! I thought it would be without any passing on the track and full of crashing from frustrated drivers but, it wasn't any of that. I'm sorry now that I didn't attend - it's only about 3 hours away from me. But, according to my reading of the Barber website map, it looked as though there would be very limited areas for spectators - that turned out to be incorrect, too.
I'll go next year!

See? This is exactly what F1 should do, too. Can someone send that link to Bernie?
We could if he was into "social networking"

Best to try a lettergram

One day Bernie will die then new F1 right owners will find out that there's something out there called "The Internet".

Wouldn't be too sure about that. I mean he has no chance of getting into Heaven, and the devil is not stupid enough to let him in, he'd loose all commercial rights to Hell.

Um, sorry to spoil the Bernie trash-fest, but he kind of already does this.

Ok, so it doesn't have commentary (but what language should it be in?), but it does have:
-much higher production quality
-much higher resolution
-images and audio that weren't aired during the race broadcast
Singapore 2008 and Brazil 2008 were
fantastic, but they've been taken offline.
Still China 2009 is mega (and only online for another week)... as is Singapore 2009.
