During the 1972 French Grand Prix at Clermont-Ferrand, a stone thrown from Ronnie Peterson's March, due to "cutting the corners" at the Charade Circuit which had no curbs at the time, hit Dr. Helmut Marko (now of Red Bull fame) in the eye as his visor got pierced. The injury damaged his eye, leaving him partially blind, ending his racing career.
Clermont-Ferrand is the home base of Michelin and also the home town of Patrick Depailler, man who won the 1978 Monaco Grand Prix.
